Caring for my Dad, August 2019

Dear Michael & June,

I wanted to leave a review on your website and think this is the way to do it 😁.

My parents agreed to explore the possibility of day care for my dad to help them both cope with the effects that dementia has. My dad has been attending The Lodge for a few months now and I am so glad that we chose your centre, it has had a massive improvement to their every day well being. Dad looks forward to going and is keen to leave as soon as I arrive to take him - no time for chit chat!

Michael, June and Zahra are kind, patient and engaging people who care for their guests with compassion and are always helpful. The Lodge itself is a lovely warm and welcoming environment where I know my dad feels safe. He enjoys all the activities available - cycling round the park on bikes adapted for those with a physical disability with Michael, spending time reminiscing with June about his Royal Navy days to name just a few. He especially loves all the home cooked food and always leaves rested and relaxed which is so important for both mum and dad.

This has allowed my mum to have some respite from the 24/7 routine that caring for someone with dementia brings. I know that she is grateful to have found The Lodge as she knows dad is happy there and he is well looked after. This has had a huge impact on her health and well being too.

It’s hard to see your parents at a stage in life when their health and lifestyle isn’t as hoped for, but The Lodge is an oasis for both of them and I can’t say how grateful we all are.

Thank you and lots of love,

Sarah & Family xx

Praise and thanks, September 2018

Dear June and Michael,

I want to give praise and thanks to both of you for the help you have given me with caring for Tony since his diagnosis of Dementia with Lewy Bodies.

I cannot speak too highly of the personalised service you give, and your patience in encouraging him to spend time in a different environment, including having an excellent lunch on each occasion. It has helped me enormously because, as a family carer, I've been learning as I go along, not always realising that I needed respite from the 24 hour commitment that dementia brings.

Please feel free to use this feedback as a testimonial, and I hope The Lodge goes from strength to strength.

Kind regards

Penny Reid

Independent Review of The Lodge, April 2018

So in my half term break I travelled to Portsmouth to lend a hand at friend’s June and Michael’s Day Centre, The Lodge. Set on the edge of Alexandra Park, this centre not only offers the usual day centre activities for clients and a much needed break for carers and relatives, it is refreshingly different in ‘thinking outside the box’ in recognising and promoting individuality and choice. Having worked in nursing homes and day centres, I have a good grounding for what is required and indeed ‘what’s out there’.

So ‘what’s on offer’ at The Lodge.

The wheelchair access and friendly 4 rooms give the opportunity to clients to enjoy many varied activities while still retaining their independence and choice.

Memory Lane Cafe

To be honest this is a first for me but is surely a favourite! What a great idea to be able to enjoy a cuppa and homemade cake when you fancy it, just like at home, no having to wait for the ‘dreaded tea trolley’ here. A chance to chat with friends, to glance at the memory boxes, pictures and artefacts around the room. To reminisce and ‘chit chat’ of ‘the good old days’. Try your hand at childhood games like Bagatelle, Shove Ha’penny, Ring Toss and the many board games, too many to mention here! It’s your choice – have a natter, tea and cake whatever the time of day.

Craft Room

A fabulous room fully stocked with an array of paints, books and crafts. There’s something for everyone’s level and capability. It’s your choice – discover the crafty Picasso in you!

Reading /Quiet Room

Cosy armchairs give this little room the relaxing, chilled out feel. Choose a good book, newspaper or magazine to flick through or just enjoy some ‘me time’. The choice is yours – a quiet relax or crafty snooze.....

Lounge/Dining Room

Dining tables are informally set out for lunch. Michael passionately creates homemade meals to accommodate dietary needs and for individual tastes.

In the lounge pull up a chair, watch a DVD or video, relax and chat, the choice is yours, enjoy a lush lunch with no rush or relax in a comfy chair....

Gardens

The enclosed friendly gardens gives the chance of a spot of gardening, practise your golf swing, sitting in the summer house watching the wildlife, watch the bowlers in the bowling green from our patio or if you fancy a bike ride around the park there are many types to choose from for all abilities. The choice is yours if you fancy taking up some sport or catching the sun’s rays or just watch the world go by....

Yes, The Lodge does meet all the usual Day Centre requirements, however with June’s medical background as a nurse and Michael’s passion for creating homemade meals and the chance for trips out, clients and relatives can be reassured that their loved one is in capable hands.

To sum up The Lodge in one word it is simply ‘Choice’.
